چکیده

For robots navigating in unknown environments, näıvely following the shortest path toward the goal often leads to poor visibility of free space, limiting navigation speed, or even preventing forward progress altogether. In this work, we train a guidance function to give the robot greater visibility into unknown parts of the environment. Unlike exploration techniques that aim to observe as much map as possible for its own sake, we reason about the value of future observations directly in terms of expected cost-to-goal. We show significant improvements in navigation speed and success rate for narrow field-of-view sensors such as popular RGBD cameras. However, contrary to our expectations, we show that our strategy makes little difference for sensors with fields-of-view greater than 80°, and we discuss why the näıve strategy is hard to beat.

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network

Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

A Q-learning Based Continuous Tuning of Fuzzy Wall Tracking

A simple easy to implement algorithm is proposed to address wall tracking task of an autonomous robot. The robot should navigate in unknown environments, find the nearest wall, and track it solely based on locally sensed data. The proposed method benefits from coupling fuzzy logic and Q-learning to meet requirements of autonomous navigations. Fuzzy if-then rules provide a reliable decision maki...

Robot Navigation in Unknown Terrains of Convex Polygonal Obstacles Using Learned Visibility Graphs

The problem of navigating an autonomous mobile robot through an unexplored terrain of obstacles is the focus of this paper. The case when the obstacles are ‘known’ has been extensively studied in literature. The process of robot navigation in completely unexplored terrains involves both learning the information about the obstacle terrain and path planning. We present an algorithm to navigate a ...

Distance Transform Based Visibility Measures for Covert Path Planning in Known but Dynamic Environments

The notion of visibility evaluation in known, initially unknown and dynamic obstacle strewn environments is relevant for many robot navigation scenarios and is particularly relevant in covert robot operations where the robot should try and remain hidden from nominated ‘sentry’ points whilst simultaneously finding an efficient path to a goal. This paper presents an elegant way of measuring visib...
